How Should Garlic Be Stored?

Nov 16, 2025

Proper storage of garlic helps maintain its flavor and prevents it from sprouting or rotting too quickly. Here are 9 best ways to store fresh garlic:

1. Store in a cool, dry place.

Garlic prefers a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. It can be stored in a pantry, cupboard, or anywhere the temperature is maintained at 60-65°F (15-18°C).

Avoid storing garlic in the refrigerator, as this will encourage sprouting.

2. Use a garlic jar.

A garlic jar is a ceramic or terracotta container specifically designed for storing garlic. It has ventilation holes to promote air circulation, which helps extend the garlic's shelf life.

These devices are ideal for maintaining suitable humidity and temperature.

3. Keep the garlic cloves whole.

Whole garlic cloves last much longer than whole garlic cloves. Keep the garlic cloves intact and do not break them apart until you need to use them.

Whole garlic cloves can be stored for several weeks in a cool, dry place.

4. Use mesh or paper bags

Storing garlic in mesh or paper bags ensures air circulation, which helps prevent mold and keeps the garlic dry.

Avoid using plastic bags, as they trap moisture and cause spoilage.

5. Freeze garlic for long-term storage

If you want to store garlic for a long time, you can freeze it. Peel the cloves and freeze them whole, chopped, or minced. Alternatively, you can freeze garlic soaked in oil (but only if you plan to use it within a few months).

Note: Freezing may change the texture, but it will retain most of the flavor.

6. Preserve with olive oil (for immediate use)

Garlic can be preserved for a short time in olive oil. Crush or chop the cloves and soak them in the oil.

This method should be used within a few weeks. Never preserve garlic in oil at room temperature, as this can cause botulism.

7. Dried garlic for long-term storage

If you have a lot of garlic, you can dry it and make garlic flakes or garlic powder. You can use a food dehydrator, oven, or air dry in a well-ventilated place.

Dried garlic can be stored for several months in an airtight container.

8. Store in vacuum-sealed bags

Vacuum sealing garlic cloves or bulbs helps remove air that can cause spoilage, thus extending their shelf life.

Vacuum-packed garlic should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer for best results.

9. Grow garlic bulbs

If you have a garden or flower pots, you can grow your own garlic cloves and grow fresh garlic. This method is more long-term but ensures a fresh garlic supply during garlic season.

Depending on how long you need to preserve the garlic, each method is good, and you can combine them for best results!
